Shippo-yaki (Enamel) Dish with Warbler & Cherry Blossom

  • Contemporary decorative dish by Ando Cloisonne

  • Ando Cloisonne was founded by Shigezaemon Ando in 1880, initially as a tobacco pipe merchants in Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture

  • As luxurious, elegant and modern cloisonne became popular at international exhibitions and exports grew, he established a factory in 1889, appointing the grandson of Tsunekichi Kaji (the originator of Owari Cloisonne) as factory manager

  • By the following year, Ando had expanded to a prime location in Ginza, Tokyo

  • In 1900, Ando Cloisonne was honored by being named a purveyor to the Imperial Household Agency which, at the time, was considered the highest honor among merchants and craftspeople

  • This piece uses Gin-sai, a technique in which a textured layer of pure silver foil is applied to the background before being covered with translucent glass glazes

  • It features an uguisu(bush warbler/nightingale) with cherry blossoms, both classic spring season motifs

  • Although a decorative plate, this can also be used as a trinket tray

  • Sticker on back marked “Ando Cloisonne”
