Temari were introduced from China to Japan in the 7th century to the nobility and were used for ball games such as juggling
During the Edo period (1603–1867), they transitioned into elaborate artistic objects with more intricate designs
In modern times, they have become purely decorative objects
This temari has been hand-made using threads of pink, gold and cream
Inside is a small amount of either beans or grains that create a very gentle rustling sound when rolled

Vintage Tokkuri (Decanter) and 2 Guinomi (Sake Cups) Set with Bamboo Motif
Designed in the E-Karatsu (painted Karatsu) Ware style, a technique brought to Japan from Korea in the 16th century to the area now known as Saga Prefecture
This set could also be attributed to Mashiko Ware (Tochigi Prefecture) which drew inspiration from Karatsu Ware and some of its characteristics, such as iron brushwork, during the Mingei (Folk Craft) Movement in the early 20th century
The clay is reddish brown with a coarse texture and the design features freehand-painted iron-glaze bamboo motifs under a speckled ash glaze
The cups have a slightly elevated foot and are of ample size

Yamagata Imono Vase
From mid to late Showa Period (1950s-1980s)
Yamagata Imono is a traditional casting craft from Yamagata Prefecture with a history spanning approximately 900 years
Made of cast bronze (a copper alloy), this vase has a broad plump body that tapers towards the base and features a mottled green-brown patina
Should you own a flower frog, one can also be placed inside to create structural arrangements like in the example photos

To clean after flower arrangements, rinse the interior and wipe the outside dry using a soft cloth

Chawan (Matcha Bowls) with Crane and Cloud Motifs
Green tea was introduced to Japan in the 12th century, brought back from China by Buddhist monks
Matcha bowls were originally imported from China, but over time began to be handcrafted in Japan
By the 16th century, as the principles of the tea ceremony evolved, so too did the aesthetic of the bowls, with simpler designs becoming more appreciated
These bowls were made by award-winning Mino Ware potter Masaki Kawai (1949~ ) from Tatsuki-gama (Kiln), Gifu Prefecture
Made in the Tenmoku style with a deep funnel-like shape flaring outwards from a small base and a curved lip
Tenmoku chawan were the first vessels used in Japan for tea ceremony, brought back by Buddhist monks during the Kamakura period (1185-1333) from Tenmoku-san (Tianmu mountain), China, where they had been studying
The bowls have been decorated with auspicious crane and clouds motifs
The cranes signify longevity and marital harmony and clouds high in the sky are a sign for rising fortune, future prosperity and stability
Made with a beautiful celadon glaze in light green and finished with kannyu, the application of a clear crackle glaze
This design is still being sold individually, however, as I was able to purchase them together, I have listed them as a set
Other than drinking matcha tea, these bowls can be used for other purposes, such as for dry snacks

Prize-winning Kokeshi titled “Mushin”
Vintage Sousaku “Creative” Style Kokeshi
Crafted by Masao Watanabe (1917-2007), an artisan from Fukushima Prefecture
He began to produce kokeshi in the 1950s, originally studying the traditional Yajiro Style before switching to Sousaku
Masao Watanabe was considered to be one of the most prolific Sousaku Style Kokeshi craftsmen in the 20th century
"Mushin” means “innocence”, as well as “having a clear mind”, free from distracting thoughts or worries

Redware Vase with Peony Motif
Tokoname ware is from Aichi Prefecture and recognized as one of Japan's six ancient kilns, along with Seto ware, Echizen ware, Tamba Tachikui ware, Bizen ware and Shigaraki ware
Its redware clay contains a large amount of iron which gives it its distinctive reddish orange colour
Etched onto the front of this vase is a gorgeous detailed botan (peony) motif
Often referred to as the "king of all flowers", the peony’s striking appearance is believed to attract financial prosperity, career advancement and success in business
As the kanji character for “tan” in “botan” is associated with the elixir of immortality, this flower is also considered a symbol of longevity and happiness

Takaoka Doki (Copperware) Vase in Turquoise Green and Gold
Takaoka Doki (Takaoka Copperware) is a traditional craft from Takaoka City, Toyama Prefecture that specializes in cast copper and bronze (copper alloy) pieces
The origin of Takaoka Copperware dates back to the Edo period (1603-1868) when casting masters were brought to the region in order to develop the area around Takaoka Castle
Artisans craft a clay, wood, or lost-wax model to create a negative loam or sand mold, in which copper alloy is melted at 1150-1250°C and poured into the mold, breaking it out once cooled and solidified
The surface is refined through physical and chemical polishing and at times carved or inlayed
Both natural materials and specialized chemicals are used to bring out colours that characterize copper and bronze tones
This vase is in a stunning dark turquoise green with gold mottling and has a less commonly found bulbous shape with a small mouth
Marked and dated on base: Year Heisei 3 (1991), to members of “Commemoration of Ofuna Industrial Club” (Ofuna is in Kanagawa Prefecture, near Kamakura)

Celadon Glaze Cherry Blossom-shaped Dish
Contemporary design dish from Chin Jukan Kiln in Kagoshima Prefecture, a Satsuma Ware pottery studio with a history dating back to 1598
Located in the village of Miyama in Hioki City, it is one of the few remaining Satsuma Ware kilns in the region
Since its founding, the kiln has remained dedicated to its craft, using the now rarely seen "Satsuma clay" and firing in traditional noborigama (climbing kiln)
The cherry blossom-shaped dish comes in a subtle light green celadon glaze and is finished with kannyu, the application of a clear crackle glaze
Cherry blossoms are a classic spring-time motif which symbolize new chapters, growth, renewal and optimism
As they bloom for only about two weeks, they also represent the transience of life and how precious it is
Each petal on this dish can be used to separate appetizers such as cheese and olives, or also suitable to serve different types of sashimi

Two Fukuro Obi Fabric Zip Pouches
Beautiful zip pouches upcycled from a fukuro obi, considered to be the most formal type of these belts and also the longest and widest
The obi’s base colour is a light gold, and features a scene with deer and floral motifs such as irises and peonies
As an extra detail, each pouch has a mauve-coloured tassel affixed to one side
The larger pouch has a white-coloured zip, while the smaller pouch’s zip is in cream
The smaller size fits perfectly within the larger pouch and can be used as a coin purse or for other small items.
The larger is perfect as a pen case, make-up pouch, or even to use as a mini clutch

A resist glazing technique was used to mask the dragon’s head while the black glaze was applied

The dragon is believed to attract affluence and prosperity, fulfill wishes and protect against misfortune and negative energy

Initially named Tachibana-ya Kichibee, in 1894 this was changed to Tachikichi by the 8th generation owner
It has since been hand-crafting original tableware, utensils and luxury gifts in workshops located in Japan’s best-known ceramics regions
This delicate porcelain set has been hand-painted with an Amime (netting) design in cobalt blue
Based on fishermen casting their nets, this pattern symbolizes gathering in good fortune and prosperity
The unbroken sequence of mesh also represents enduring relationships and long-lasting happiness
The net motif can be traced back to Jomon period (c. 14,000–300 BCE) earthenware, when rope was used to imprint patterns into clay
By the Edo period (1603-1868), it had become widely popular and appeared on kimono and ceramics

This adorable owl is a Shimafukuro (Blakiston’s fish owl)
Crafted from Enju wood (Japanese Pagoda Tree), known for its alternating brown and light-brown ridges, creating a striking, unique contrast in carvings
The Ainu (indigenous people of Japan) traditionally use Enju wood for many of their carvings, especially of owls
They believe in Kamuy which are spirits that inhabit everything in the natural world, from animals, plants, fire, water, the wind and so on
The Shimafukuro is considered to be a Kamuy that watches over and protects Ainu villages from evil

Souvenir Style Kokeshi from Atami, Shizuoka Prefecture
From late Showa Period (1960s-80s)
Both are marked Atami Onsen, a seaside town in Shizuoka Prefecture, which first became known for its therapeutic hot springs during the Kamakura Period (1185-1333)
Favoured also by Shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu (1543-1616), he even had barrels of this water transported to Edo Castle for personal use
Atami peaked as a popular holiday destination during the Showa Period from around the mid-1960s and became a destination for honeymooners, group tours and company retreats
Purchased at a market many years ago for my own collection, I have kept these two together as they came from the same seller and I feel the previous owner displayed them as a pair
Although the artisan is unknown, the way the facial features are painted suggests they may be by the same craftsperson or from the same studio
The taller doll has plum blossom on her kimono, while the smaller has chrysanthemums and an obi belt with bamboo motifs

Ceramic Demitasse Cup & Saucer
Shino Ware is a type of Mino Ware from Gifu Prefecture that dates back to the late 16th century
Its key characteristics are a thick milky-white feldspar glaze with hi-iro (scarlet/reddish-brown) markings and iron-painted decoration
Shino Ware was the first Japanese ware to use an underglaze technique in which patterns, such as plants and flowers, were painted using iron oxide before an overglaze was applied
There are various types of Shino ware, including Muji Shino (plain white), E-shino (with painted designs) and Nezumi Shino (greyish tone)
This cup and saucer set was made in the Nezumi Shino style - nezumi meaning mouse, in reference to its grey colour
For Nezumi Shino, Oniita (iron slip) is applied to the clay body and specific areas of the design are carved using tools like a chisel (sgraffito technique)
A thick layer of feldspar glaze is applied over the surface before firing
During the firing, the areas retaining the iron slip turn into a mouse grey hue, while the carved sections reveal the white clay body beneath
This set clearly shows the above technique and has a modern, almost geometric design
The cup is slightly larger than a demitasse cup, and the saucer can also be used as a small side dish, perhaps for some biscuits to enjoy with your espresso

Handmade Piggy Bank in Sangiri style
Bizen Ware pottery originates from Bizen, Okayama Prefecture, one of Japan's Six Ancient Kilns, and dates back to the 14th century
It is characterized by natural patterns created by flames and ash of a wood-fired kiln, and without the use of glaze
Sangiri is a style of Bizen Ware characterized by smoky shades of grey-blue, black-brown, or deep grey
To achieve this effect, pieces are placed near the kiln walls where ash can easily settle; the covered parts smolder and alter the surface of the clay.
Handmade by Bizen Ware potter Kazuhiko Uchida (1971~)
Originally from Shizuoka Prefecture, after completing graduate studies in Agricultural Chemistry at Shimane University, he underwent one year of training at the Bizen Pottery Center
Having honed his pottery skills at Taizan-gama (kiln) in Bizen, he established his own studio in 2005
Uchida uses Bizen clay to create unique pieces of art, from everyday vessels to playful and unique pieces, using both an electric potter's wheel and by hand-building
He is known for making both traditional and animal-shaped pottery
This piggy bank is a rare find as he no longer makes these pieces

Katazome (Stencil-Dyed) Haori with Colourful Lining
A haori is a traditional jacket worn over a kimono, usually hip or thigh length
It functions more like a Western cardigan or light coat and is worn open at the front
Haori himo (small decorative cords) can be used to fasten it loosely
The textile of this vintage haori has been made by the katazome stencil dye technique
An interesting shimmery fabric which at certain angles reveals a pattern beneath the surface design
Another hidden feature of this piece is the colourful almost tropical choice of the lining fabric
This is reminiscent of the Edo period when laws banned ordinary citizens from wearing luxurious fabrics and bright colours in public
To express their personal style, they turned to Ura-masaru (hidden fashion), keeping their kimono modest and plain on the outside, but lined with lavish, at times expensive bright-coloured fabrics with intricate artwork on the inside
It still has its Shitsuke-ito, long basting stitches in white thread used to hold the fabric layers flat and maintain its shape during storage
Gently pull out the stitches and remove before wearing
An unused vintage pair of haori himo is included

Souvenir Style Kokeshi from Atami, Shizuoka Prefecture
From late Showa Period (1960s-80s)
Both are marked Atami Onsen, a seaside town in Shizuoka Prefecture, which first became known for its therapeutic hot springs during the Kamakura Period (1185-1333)
Favoured also by Shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu (1543-1616), he even had barrels of this water transported to Edo Castle for personal use
Atami peaked as a popular holiday destination during the Showa Period from around the mid-1960s and became a destination for honeymooners, group tours and company retreats
Purchased at a market many years ago for my own collection, I have kept these two together as they came from the same seller and I feel the previous owner displayed them as a pair
Although the artisan is unknown, the way the facial features are painted suggests they may be by the same craftsperson or from the same studio
The taller doll has plum blossom on her kimono, while the smaller has chrysanthemums and an obi belt with bamboo motifs

Shingata “New/Modern” Style Kokeshi with Plum Blossom Motif
Katsumi Sasaki (1928-2008) moved to Shiroishi City, in Miyagi Prefecture in 1948 where he began learning woodworking and subsequently opened his own studio in the area
His son Isao and Isao’s wife Miho are also kokeshi craftspeople and continue to produce dolls in Shiroishi City
Shingata Kokeshi differs from Dento (traditional) and Sousaku (creative) Kokeshi and means modern style dolls
Currently, there are around 20 kokeshi artisans in Shiroishi, however, Isao’s is the only workshop producing Shingata kokeshi and as there is no successor, the production of this style may come to an end after him

Dento (traditional) style kokeshi by Fukuju Yusa
Vintage Dento “Traditional” Style Kokeshi from the 1980s
Fukuju Yusa (1930–2001) was born into a prominent kokeshi artisan family from Naruko, Miyagi Prefecture
At age nine, his family moved to Akita Prefecture, and as a teenager he trained in woodworking under his kokeshi craftsman father, Sakari Takahashi, eventually making dolls himself
After the war, the family returned to Naruko, and in 1957 he was adopted into another well-known kokeshi artisan family, taking on the name “Yusa”
Around this time, he also began producing Sousaku “Creative” style kokeshi and went on to win the Prime Minister’s Award in 1960
Naruko type kokeshi typically feature a melon-shaped head, a sturdy body often decorated with chrysanthemum patterns, and a distinctive squeaking sound when the head is twisted, due to the way it is inserted into the body

Dento (traditional) style kokeshi by Izu Touru
Dento “Traditional” Style Kokeshi, newer piece from 2014
Izu Touru (1952– ) is the eldest son of kokeshi maker Izu Mamoru (1925-2019) and from Ginzan, Obanazawa City in Yamagata Prefecture
His uncle was also well-known kokeshi artisan, Izu Sadao (1905～1938), and this particular design of kokeshi has been modeled on his work (marked on base: “Sadao-gata” meaning “Sadao model”)
In 1971, after graduating from the mechanical engineering department of his high school, Touru joined the Self-Defense Forces in Kamimachi
In 1973, he was discharged from the forces and under his father Mamoru, he began training in woodcarving from sourcing materials and basic wood-cutting
Eventually, he began carving kokeshi dolls around 1975 and from 1978, began also painting and colouring the pieces, showing how long the apprenticeship before one can become a fully-fledged kokeshi artisan
He also carved dolls for his elderly father to paint until his passing in 2019
Ginzan Kokeshi dolls, named after Ginza Onsen in Yamagata Prefecture, have been produced kokeshi since 1915
Due to connections with Naruko kokeshi craftsmen at the time, the design shares characteristics such as head shape and narrow waist
Ginzan Kokeshi are also distinguished by their large eyes and black bob hair
They are also called Oshin Kokeshi due to being featured in the popular NHK drama of the same name that aired in 1983
The Izu family are currently the only makers of these dolls and in their third generation
As the craft has been passed down from father to son, they are also known as Izu Kokeshi

Mimitsuki Hagi Ware Vase
Hagi ware pottery originates from Hagi, Yamaguchi Prefecture, and dates back to the early 17th century
With the tea ceremony seen as a status symbol, Mori Terumoto, founder and lord of the Hagi domain, opened an official kiln for the Mori clan, inviting two Korean potters to produce tea ceremony utensils
Hagi ware is characterized by its soft texture, achieved using clay that does not harden easily
It is fired at low temperature for a long time, typically 15–16 hours for bisque firing, then about 12 hours for glaze firing
It can absorb water and liquids such as tea or sake, so over time, the surface of the glaze can change in appearance, known as Hagi no Nana Bake, or "the seven metamorphoses of Hagi"
The vase has a saucer-shaped lip, a narrow neck, a geometric base, and is a very solid, heavy piece
To achieve the dappled, spot-like markings, the piece is coated with white slip and covered in transparent glaze, then undergoes reduction firing
Mimitsuki, meaning "with ears", refers to the small lugs or handles attached to the sides of the vessel

Hagi Ware Dish with Heart-Shaped Glaze
Hagi ware pottery originates from Hagi, Yamaguchi Prefecture, and dates back to the early 17th century
It is characterized by its soft texture, achieved using clay that does not easily harden
Typically bisque fired at a low temperature for 15–16 hours, then another 12 hours or so for glaze firing
It can absorb water and liquids such as tea or sake, so over time, the surface of the glaze can change in appearance, known as Hagi no Nana Bake, or "the seven metamorphoses of Hagi"
This is a unique, one-of-a-kind pre-loved dish where the artisan has achieved a heart-shape design through glazing techniques
It also has a transparent crackle overglaze called “kannyu”
This type of dish shape is called Mokko Bachi meaning “quince-shaped bowl”

The deliberate indentation, or déformé, is a Japanese technique used to give structural tension to traditional vessel shapes such as vases and tokkuri (sake decanters), giving it a wabi-sabi asymmetry

Japanese studio pieces are often unsigned, stemming from Mingei (folk craft) Movement ideology, which believed beauty came from humility, natural materials and function, rather than the ego of the artisan

Handmade Piggy Bank in Sangiri style
Bizen Ware pottery originates from Bizen, Okayama Prefecture, one of Japan's Six Ancient Kilns, and dates back to the 14th century
It is characterized by natural patterns created by flames and ash of a wood-fired kiln, and without the use of glaze
Sangiri is a style of Bizen Ware characterized by smoky shades of grey-blue, black-brown, or deep grey
To achieve this effect, pieces are placed near the kiln walls where ash can easily settle; the covered parts smolder and alter the surface of the clay.
Handmade by Bizen Ware potter Kazuhiko Uchida (1971~)
Originally from Shizuoka Prefecture, after completing graduate studies in Agricultural Chemistry at Shimane University, he underwent one year of training at the Bizen Pottery Center
Having honed his pottery skills at Taizan-gama (kiln) in Bizen, he established his own studio in 2005
Uchida uses Bizen clay to create unique pieces of art, from everyday vessels to playful and unique pieces, using both an electric potter's wheel and by hand-building
He is known for making both traditional and animal-shaped pottery
This piggy bank is a rare find as he no longer makes these pieces

Botamochi is a traditional confectionary made from pounded glutinous rice, formed into round or oval shapes and covered in red bean paste
Botamochi Bizen Ware is characterized by a pattern resembling this sweet, created by placing rounded objects on top of the piece during firing, resulting in uneven firing and lighter round patterns where areas are covered
Bizen ware is favored for sake cups due to it the porous, unglazed clay which provides insulation, making it ideal for both hot and cold sake, as well as retaining its freshness and flavour

Uses an unusual purple mauve-coloured under glaze, with crane motifs and lines hand-painted in white slip on both sides

Vintage Year of the Snake Zodiac Ornament

Eto (Zodiac) figurines are popular decorative objects in Japan, representing the spirit of the year ahead
The Hebi (Snake) is associated with meanings such as resurrection and rebirth, bountiful harvests, financial fortune and wisdom
As snakes grow by repeatedly shedding their skin, they are regarded as symbols of renewal and healing
Snakes have long been revered as guardians of crops because they catch rodents and prevent damage to fields
They are also considered messengers of Benzaiten (one of the Seven Lucky Gods), particularly the white snake, and are venerated as auspicious creatures that bring financial luck and prosperity
