Arita Ware Lidded Cups
Pair of Arita Ware Meoto Yunomi (Tea Cups) by premium brand Fukagawa Seiji
Meoto (meaning couple) yunomi are traditionally given as wedding gifts
One cup is typically smaller than the other
Arita porcelain, Japan’s oldest porcelain, originated in the early 17th century in Arita, Saga Prefecture
Fukagawa Seiji was founded in 1894 by Chuji Fukagawa, the second son of Eizaemon Fukagawa of the Koransha company
The company has served as purveyor for the Japanese Imperial Household since 1910
Known for both its quality and artistry, Fukagawa Seiji produces a wide range of items including tableware, vases and decorative objects
These cups feature crane and cloud motifs which are both auspicious patterns
Cranes are traditionally thought to signify longevity, as well as known to mate for life, making them a symbol for marital harmony
While the cranes have been painted in gold (kinsai) and silver (ginsai), the clouds are depicted in more muted pastel colours
Clouds high up in the sky are seen as a sign of rising fortune, future prosperity and stability
The lid finials and base are accented in a soothing periwinkle blue
Marked “Fukagawasei” on base
