Arita porcelain, Japan’s oldest porcelain, originated in the early 17th century in Arita, Saga Prefecture
Fukagawa Seiji was founded in 1894 by Chuji Fukagawa, the second son of Eizaemon Fukagawa of the Koransha company
The company has served as purveyor for the Japanese Imperial Household since 1910
Known for both its quality and artistry, Fukagawa Seiji produces a wide range of items including tableware, vases and decorative objects
This sake set features hand-painted grape motifs on a background of rich cobalt blue
As a single bunch of grapes bears many individual fruits, they are regarded as symbols of prosperity and bountiful harvest
They are also thought of as auspicious due to how their vines grow vigorously and intertwine, which can be interpreted as forming connections and increasing family fortunes
Marked “Fukagawasei” on base of tokkuri and the company symbol (Mt Fuji) is marked under each cup
