Hama Ware Vase
Antique Ceramic Vase with Peony Motif
From late Meiji to Taisho Period (1900s~20s)
Hama-yaki or Yokohama-yaki (Yokohama Ware) was a traditional craft from Yokohama, Kanagawa Prefecture
Plain white porcelain or earthenware manufactured in other regions such as Arita and Seto were shipped to workshops in the port city of Yokohama
There, local artisans hand-painted the final decoration and carried out overglaze firing before the finished pieces were exported overseas
This vase has been painted with peonies in red and pink with added gold gilding, similar to Satsuma and Kutani designs
Mold marks can be seen where two sections of porcelain were pressed together to create the vase
Marked “Hama-Yaki (Yokohama Ware)”
