Kamakura-bori Sandanjyu Box

¥18,480

Sandanjyu (Three-tiered box) with Crane and Turtle Design

  • Kamakura-bori is a type of woodcarving technique from Kamakura, Kanagawa Prefecture, that dates back to the 14th century

  • It was started by the Busshi, sculptors specializing in Buddhist iconography and ritual implements

  • The wood is carved before it is lacquered, and chisel markings are intentionally left to accentuate patterned areas

  • By the Edo Period (1603-1868) the Busshi began to also produce non religious items, mainly utensils for tea ceremony such as incense cases, trays and tea caddies

  • Cranes and turtles are often paired together as they both symbolize longevity

  • The cranes are carved to look like origami (paper folding craft) and the hexagonal pattern represents turtle shell

  • Sandanjyu boxes are traditionally used for food, most often for new years celebratory meals and for picnic bentos

  • In modern times, they are being used to store other items - they make a lovely accessory box

  • This design is less typical for Kamakura-bori and a departure from the more common floral motifs

CARING FOR YOUR LACQUERWARE PIECE

  • Keep out of direct sunlight to prevent discoloration and deterioration

  • For long-term storage, wrap in paper to protect from damage and help the lacquer and wood retain moisture, reducing the risk of cracking or peeling
