Made from vintage children’s kimono fabric worn for Shichi-go-san (traditional celebrations for 3, 5 and 7 year-olds)
The crafter has selected vibrant and shimmering offcuts of festive textiles to hand-make this Sakana-no-ichya-boshi decoration
Sakana-no-ichya-boshi are fish that have been salted then dried overnight
They are considered an auspicious food and enjoyed at celebrations as well as given as gifts for special occasions
As the drying process extends shelf life, it symbolizes longevity and enduring relationships
The hanging rod is in Kohaku (red & white) colours, also traditionally used for celebrations and festivals
“Red” represents joy and birth, while “white” represents beginnings and purity
As the fish are not permanently fixed in place, their order can be rearranged
Handcrafted in Kanagawa Prefecture
