Vintage Sousaku “Creative” Style Kokeshi crafted by Maruyama Hougetsu (1948~ ), an artisan from Yonezawa, Yamagata Prefecture
From the 1960s they earned various awards, however, their biggest milestone came in 1978 when they received the Japan Industrial Design Promotion Organization Award (now known as the “Good Design Award”)
“Yamato” refers to the ancient name for Japan and “Zakura (sakura)” means cherry blossoms, the country’s representative flowers
This doll has an interesting use of wood grain, where for its face the craftsman chose a section with one half darker and the other lighter, split straight down the middle
Artisan stamp on base, along with the date and place of purchase: Showa Year 49 (1974), December 28-31, in Nozawa (Nagano Prefecture)

CONDITION - VERY GOOD
Minimal signs of wear with only faint patina from sun. Overall very good condition.

CARING FOR YOUR KOKESHI
To dust, wipe gently with a dry soft cloth
Avoid touching kokeshi with wet hands as the dye/paint may run
Recommended to keep kokeshi away from direct sunlight to avoid wood from darkening and dye/paint fading
