Pair of Kutani Ware Meoto Yunomi (Teacups)

  • Vintage Meoto yunomi from 1980s~1990s

  • Meoto (meaning couple) yunomi are traditionally given as wedding gifts

  • One cup is typically smaller than the other

  • Kutani ware originates from the Kaga region of Ishikawa Prefecture, with roots dating back to around 1655 during the early Edo period

  • Its notable features are vivid colours with bold, intricate, elegant designs and often the application of gold leaf

  • The five main colours traditionally used in Kutani ware are red, yellow, green, purple, and Prussian blue

  • It also often features an intentional crazing technique called kannyu to add a crackle design to the glaze

  • These yunomi have been painted and fired multiple times as each color is built up layer by layer, concluding with a final application of gold

  • Hand-painting in gold is a technique called kinrande, which translates as “gold brocade”

  • The Chrysanthemum motif on these pieces is a popular flower that has been used since ancient times in Japan for ornamental purposes, as well as believed to promote longevity when used medicinally

  • Considered to be a noble flower, it is the crest of the Imperial family
