Small Tokoname Ware Kyusu (teapot) and Yuzamashi (water cooler)
Tokoname ware from Aichi Prefecture is made using clay that contains a high amount of iron, giving it its distinctive reddish-orange colour
In 2017, Tokoname ware was officially recognised as one of Japan’s six ancient kilns, along with Seto ware, Echizen ware, Tamba Tachikui ware, Bizen ware, and Shigaraki ware
Nerikomi is a traditional marbling technique that involves layering and kneading together different coloured clays
Both the Kyusu (teapot) and Yuzamashi (water cooler) have been made with a blend of green, dark brown and red clay
For the Kyusu, sections of clay have been sliced off to create a faceted design
Yuzamashi is a small bowl used to cool down water before putting it in the kyusu
These smaller size Kyusu and Yuzamashi are often used for Gyokuro, a higher grade of Sencha, but can also be used for other varieties
Although these are listed as a set, they were originally made by different kilns
The Kyusu is marked on its base with a kiln mark, while the Yuzamashi has been hand-signed (carved) by the artisan
