Nerikomi Teapot & Yuzamashi Set

¥12,980

Small Tokoname Ware Kyusu (teapot) and Yuzamashi (water cooler)

  • Tokoname ware from Aichi Prefecture is made using clay that contains a high amount of iron, giving it its distinctive reddish-orange colour

  • In 2017, Tokoname ware was officially recognised as one of Japan’s six ancient kilns, along with Seto ware, Echizen ware, Tamba Tachikui ware, Bizen ware, and Shigaraki ware

  • Nerikomi is a traditional marbling technique that involves layering and kneading together different coloured clays

  • Both the Kyusu (teapot) and Yuzamashi (water cooler) have been made with a blend of green, dark brown and red clay

  • For the Kyusu, sections of clay have been sliced off to create a faceted design

  • Yuzamashi is a small bowl used to cool down water before putting it in the kyusu

  • These smaller size Kyusu and Yuzamashi are often used for Gyokuro, a higher grade of Sencha, but can also be used for other varieties

  • Although these are listed as a set, they were originally made by different kilns

  • The Kyusu is marked on its base with a kiln mark, while the Yuzamashi has been hand-signed (carved) by the artisan
