Ceramic Demitasse Cup & Saucer
Shino Ware is a type of Mino Ware from Gifu Prefecture that dates back to the late 16th century
Its key characteristics are a thick milky-white feldspar glaze with hi-iro (scarlet/reddish-brown) markings and iron-painted decoration
Shino Ware was the first Japanese ware to use an underglaze technique in which patterns, such as plants and flowers, were painted using iron oxide before an overglaze was applied
There are various types of Shino ware, including Muji Shino (plain white), E-shino (with painted designs) and Nezumi Shino (greyish tone)
This cup and saucer set was made in the Nezumi Shino style - nezumi meaning mouse, in reference to its grey colour
For Nezumi Shino, Oniita (iron slip) is applied to the clay body and specific areas of the design are carved using tools like a chisel (sgraffito technique)
A thick layer of feldspar glaze is applied over the surface before firing
During the firing, the areas retaining the iron slip turn into a mouse grey hue, while the carved sections reveal the white clay body beneath
This set clearly shows the above technique and has a modern, almost geometric design
The cup is slightly larger than a demitasse cup, and the saucer can also be used as a small side dish, perhaps for some biscuits to enjoy with your espresso
