Original Hanga (Woodblock Print) Postcard
Printed around 1950s-60s by Tomikichiro Tokuriki
Tomikichiro Tokuriki (1902-2000) was a Sousaku hanga (creative prints) artist who mainly featured Kyoto scenes in his work
After WWII he set up his own publishing company, producing woodblock print postcards of his designs as well as other artists
This print is an original by Tokuriki, marked “Tomi” for “Tomikichiro” in the left hand bottom corner
Sanjusangendo is the alternative name for Rengeo-in Temple in Kyoto, known for its 1001 statues of Kannon, the Goddess of Mercy and Compassion
Founded in 1164, the temple was rebuilt a century later after being destroyed by fire
Its main hall measures 120 meters in length, making it Japan’s longest wooden structure
In the center of the hall is a large Senju Kannon (1000-armed Kannon) statue, flanked by 500 human-sized Kannon statues on either side
This print features some of these Kannon statues
