Bodhidharma, known as Daruma in Japan, was a 5th or 6th century semi-legendary monk who is credited with bringing Zen Buddhism to China
According to legend, he spent nine years meditating in a cave facing a wall to achieve enlightenment
The Daruma is a symbol of perseverance, resilience and good luck
This figurine has been carved using Itto-bori, a wood-carving technique where an object is carved from a single piece of wood.
Specifically, this particular carving is called Hida Takayama Itto-bori and comes from the region of the same name in Gifu Prefecture
It is a seated Daruma-type, similar to the hariko (papier-mache) style where he is represented without arms or legs, said to have withered away after continuously meditating for many years
