Shingata (new/modern) style kokeshi
Shingata Kokeshi emerged in the mid-20th century as a bridge between traditional and modern doll carving
Unlike Sosaku (Creative) kokeshi which completely break away from traditional formats, Shingata dolls retain the classic silhouette of traditional Dento kokeshi but with a fresh, modern slant
Hand-painted on these dolls are the legendary elderly couple Takasago
Derived from a famous Noh play, the pair symbolize a happy, long-lasting marriage and growing old together in perfect harmony
Jo, the male, holds a rake to gather good fortune and wealth, while Uba, the female, holds a broom to sweep away evil spirits and misfortune, ensuring a blessed home
According to legend, the spirits of the couple now live in two sacred pine trees across the sea from each other, representing enduring love that overcomes physical distance
Pieces with Takasago imagery are often chosen for wedding and anniversary gifts

CARING FOR YOUR KOKESHI
To dust, wipe gently with a dry soft cloth
Avoid touching kokeshi with wet hands as the dye/paint may run
Recommended to keep kokeshi away from direct sunlight to avoid wood from darkening and dye/paint fading
