Shingata “New/Modern” Style Kokeshi with Plum Blossom Motif

  • Katsumi Sasaki (1928-2008) moved to Shiroishi City, in Miyagi Prefecture in 1948 where he began learning woodworking and subsequently opened his own studio in the area

  • His son Isao and Isao’s wife Miho are also kokeshi craftspeople and continue to produce dolls in Shiroishi City

  • Shingata Kokeshi differs from Dento (traditional) and Sousaku (creative) Kokeshi and means modern style dolls

  • Currently, there are around 20 kokeshi artisans in Shiroishi, however, Isao’s is the only workshop producing Shingata kokeshi and as there is no successor, the production of this style may come to an end after him

  • Marked on base: artisan signature “Katsumi”

Some patina from sun but evenly distributed. A few dents and scratches on face and body. Overall good condition for its age.

CARING FOR YOUR KOKESHI

  • To dust, wipe gently with a dry soft cloth

  • Avoid touching kokeshi with wet hands as the dye/paint may run

  • Recommended to keep kokeshi away from direct sunlight to avoid wood from darkening and dye/paint fading
