Kokeshi with Chrysanthemum Motif Kimono

  • Sousaku “Creative” Style Kokeshi by award-winning artisan Kazuo Takamizawa (1927~ )

  • Born in Gunma Prefecture, he began producing kokeshi in his early 20s

  • Gunma is well-known for having many prominent sosaku kokeshi craftspeople

  • Initially, he produced dolls with very little colour, decorating mainly using pyrography (wood-burning) techniques

  • In the 1970s, he introduced bold colours to his designs and won many awards, including the Prime Minister’s Award

  • The Chrysanthemum motif on this kokeshi’s kimono is a popular flower that has been used since ancient times in Japan for ornamental purposes, as well as believed to promote longevity when used medicinally

  • Considered to be a noble flower, it is the crest of the Imperial family

  • Marked “Kazuo” on base

CARING FOR YOUR KOKESHI

  • To dust, wipe gently with a dry soft cloth

  • Avoid touching kokeshi with wet hands as the dye/paint may run

  • Recommended to keep kokeshi away from direct sunlight to avoid wood from darkening and dye/paint fading
