Studio Pottery Vase
Handbuilt Vase with Speckled Glaze
A unique piece using a resist glazing technique to reveal the iron-rich red underglaze in a speckle pattern
The deliberate indentation, or déformé, is a Japanese technique used to give structural tension to traditional vessel shapes such as vases and tokkuri (sake decanters), giving it a wabi-sabi asymmetry
An unsigned piece which may have originally come with a tomobako (signed accompanying wooden box)
Japanese studio pieces are often unsigned, stemming from Mingei (folk craft) Movement ideology, which believed beauty came from humility, natural materials and function, rather than the ego of the artisan
The movement celebrated ordinary, utilitarian objects for everyday use while keeping the anonymity of the craftsperson
