Temari were introduced from China to Japan in the 7th century to the nobility and were used for ball games such as juggling
During the Edo period (1603–1867), they transitioned into elaborate artistic objects with more intricate designs
In modern times, they have become purely decorative objects
This huge temari has been hand-made using threads of red as a base and white for the floral pattern
The base uses two types of thread, one plain red interspersed with a shinier red type
A striking piece of decor, considerably larger than a regular-sized temari (see photo for comparison)
Comes with a wooden stand
