Antique Arita Ware Dishes with Hand-painted Hawk Design

  • From late Meiji to early Taisho Period (1900~1920)

  • Marked with kanji character "Hi" for the former province of "Hizen"

  • Hizen was a region which Arita, Imari and Karatsu was part of during the Edo Period (1603-1868) and became a hub of ceramic production

  • Small plates used in Japanese cuisine to serve side dishes

  • In modern times, can also be used as a catch-all or trinket dish

  • They have been decorated with transfers, hand-painting and itchinmori techniques

  • Itchinmori is a technique where slip, glaze, or paint is poured into itchin (dropper) and squeezed out to decorate the piece

  • Hawks can reach their target with speed and precision, their sharp claws capturing their prey and never letting go, thus associated with grasping luck, happiness, and succeeding in life
