  • A wealthy merchant, Numami Rozan from Kuwana (northern Mie), built a kiln and began tea utensil production due to his passion for tea ceremony

  • Banko ware uses local iron-rich clay and is typically unglazed

  • The iron is said to soften the astringency of tea leaves and mellows the flavor

  • Incredibly heat-resistant, Banko ware is also known for producing donabe (earthenware pots)
