Otogi-inu Ornament with Crane, Turtle & Shochikubai Design

  • Pre-loved contemporary piece from Yakushi Gama, a kiln located in Aichi Prefecture

  • This particular design is no longer in production

  • The design is based on the traditional inuhariko (papier-mache dogs), pairs of containers shaped as dogs lying down

  • The lids could be removed to place amulets or talismans inside

  • As dogs are thought to give birth easily, these containers were gifted to newlyweds for good luck in childbirth, symbolizing a safe and easy delivery

  • This piece is made of ceramic and serves as an ornament rather than a container (there is no removable lid)

  • It is adorned with a crane and turtle, both symbols of longevity, along with shochikubai (pine, bamboo, plum), auspicious motifs representing resilience and good fortune
