Ceramic Akazu Ware Lidded Container with Camellia Design
Akazu Ware is produced in the Akazu area, located in the eastern part of the city of Seto, Aichi Prefecture.
This craft is a type of Seto ware, one of Japan's Six Ancient Kilns
It has a very long history, initially developed from the base of Mt Sanage in Seto during the Kofun period (300-538)
It is characterized by the use of 12 diverse decorative techniques, as well as seven traditional glazes, including Oribe, which is used in this piece
This piece is painted with Camellias, both on the lid and within the container
Camellias bloom during the harsh cold of winter while retaining their green leaves, symbolizing vitality and patience
They have long been planted in shrines and temple grounds, as they are considered sacred trees with the power to ward off evil
Crafted by ceramicist Kazushige Matsubara
Marked "Matsuyama" (kiln) on the base
Originally used for kaiseki cuisine or confectionery, but can also be used as a trinket box
