Echizen Shikki Fubako (Document Box) with Peony design

  • Contemporary piece from 1990s

  • By Echizen Lacquerware artisan Matsuda Rinzan (1959~ )

  • Made in Sabae City, Fukui Prefecture

  • Lacquerware from this region is distinguished by its elegant luster and durability

  • Decorative techniques of “maki-e” and “chinkin” have been used, where the peony design has been carved into the lacquered surface and gold leaf or fine gold powder inlaid into the grooves

  • Peony flowers are associated with nobility and stateliness, symbolizing wealth and happiness

  • Fubako were traditionally used to store letters, postcards and other correspondence

  • In modern times, they are also used for storing stationery such as notebooks and pens, as well as gadgets like phones, tablets, and charging cables

CONDITION - GOOD

Scratches are mostly on the underside of the base, with one on the corner.
There are also two faint scratches on the lid—one near the top right of the peony and another beneath the stem. These imperfections are not easily visible unless viewed closely.
Overall, the item is in good condition.

CARING FOR YOUR LACQUERWARE PIECE

  • Gently wipe with a damp soft cloth, then dry with a clean, soft cloth

  • Remove rings, watches, or other accessories to avoid scratching
