Small Hand-painted Enso Design Side Dishes

  • Seto Ware is from Aichi Prefecture with a history dating back to the Heian Period (8th-12th Century)

  • It is known for its abundant white clay deposits, allowing for both pottery and porcelain production

  • Today, along with Mino ware and Hasami ware, Seto ware is one of the major pottery production centers in Japan

  • This side dish set is made by Maruko Nakashima Co., Ltd., a ceramic ware manufacturer based in Kamamoto-cho, Seto-shi, Aichi Prefecture

  • Founded in 1957, the company is involved in the planning, manufacturing, wholesale and retail of ceramic products

  • Each of these contemporary dishes features a hand-painted gold-coloured Enso on a black base, applied in single brushstrokes

  • Enso, meaning “circular form”, is a symbol of Zen Buddhism

  • The continuous flow of the circle represents the free-flowing mind, free from attachment

  • Marked “To” for Touji, the company brand name for Maruko Nakashima Co., Ltd.
