Seto Ware is from Aichi Prefecture with a history dating back to the Heian Period (8th-12th Century)
It is known for its abundant white clay deposits, allowing for both pottery and porcelain production
Today, along with Mino ware and Hasami ware, Seto ware is one of the major pottery production centers in Japan
This side dish set is made by Maruko Nakashima Co., Ltd., a ceramic ware manufacturer based in Kamamoto-cho, Seto-shi, Aichi Prefecture
Founded in 1957, the company is involved in the planning, manufacturing, wholesale and retail of ceramic products
Each of these contemporary dishes features a hand-painted gold-coloured Enso on a black base, applied in single brushstrokes
Enso, meaning “circular form”, is a symbol of Zen Buddhism
The continuous flow of the circle represents the free-flowing mind, free from attachment
Marked “To” for Touji, the company brand name for Maruko Nakashima Co., Ltd.
