Hariko Nodder Dragon
Hand-crafted Hariko (Papier-Mache) for Year of the Dragon
Hariko or papier-mache craft is said to have originated in China in the 2nd Century and introduced to Japan during the Heian Period (794~1192)
Paper or a similar material is layered over a mould made from wood or clay and the inside is left hollow
This particular type of Hariko figurine is called “Kubifuri” meaning “nodding”
The Tatsu or Ryu (dragon) is the only mythical creature among the twelve signs of the Chinese zodiac animals
Dragons are considered to be gods of water, as well as symbols of power, prosperity and forces of nature, such as tornadoes, rainbows and lightning
They are associated with bountiful harvests, career advancement and financial luck
The figurine comes with a paper folding screen in gold, red display mat, wooden plaque and a descriptive note
