Ikkanbari Tray or Bowl with Kongo Rikishi, Guardian of Buddha

  • Ikkanbari is a traditional Japanese craft in which multiple layers of Japanese paper are pasted onto a bamboo or wooden frame, then coated in either persimmon tannins or lacquer to reinforce it

  • It is thought that the technique originates from the 1620s when Hirai Ikon, a Chinese scholar and lacquerware craftsman, traveled to Japan to escape war in his country and upon arriving, combined his lacquer technique with Japanese high quality washi paper

  • Featuring Ungyo, one of the Kongo Rikishi (or Nio), guardian deities of Buddhism that are typically found at temple gates in pairs

  • On the right is Agyo with his mouth open (sounding “a”), while on the left with a closed mouth (sounding “un”), is Ungyo and together symbolize the beginning and end of the universe, “a-un”

  • As this tray is finished with persimmon tannin and is unlacquered, it is best suited to holding light items or enjoyed as a decorative piece

  • Made by artisan who specializes in Ikkanbari craft, from Kawagoe, Saitama Prefecture
