Hariko Nodder Tiger
Traditional Folk Craft “Hariko no Tora” (Papier-mache Tiger)
Regional folk craft Hariko tiger, handcrafted by Tai Mingei (folk craft) in Mitoyo City, Kagawa Prefecture
Tsuyako Tai is a fifth-generation artisan who continues to preserve the techniques inherited from her predecessor, Kiyomi Tai
Each tiger is meticulously made by layering and pasting washi paper onto a wooden mould, then once dried, individually hand-painted and finished with a varnish
They feature bold colours, expressive facial details, horsehair applied as whiskers, a detachable tail and a humorous nodding or swaying neck
As tigers are traditionally associated with strength, courage and protection these Hariko are often gifted to children or for 60th birthdays and are also popular commemorative items for store renovations
Tai-san creates these tigers with the hope they become much cherished pieces of home decor
