Lacquered Hand Mirror with Magnolia Motif
Kamakura-bori is a type of woodcarving technique from Kamakura, Kanagawa Prefecture, that dates back to the 14th century
It was started by the “Busshi”, sculptors specializing in Buddhist iconography and ritual implements
The wood is carved before it is lacquered, and chisel markings are intentionally left to accentuate patterned areas
By the Edo Period (1603-1868) the Busshi began to also produce non religious items, mainly utensils for tea ceremony such as incense cases, trays and tea caddies
This mirror is from Yogado, a long-established Kamakura-bori store located in front of the famous Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine
They are known for using katsura wood from Hokkaido, which is prized for its exceptional quality and durability
The Shizumi technique has been applied to this piece, where a three-dimensional effect is created through deep carving and the application of multiple layers of lacquer
It features a Taisanboku (Magnolia) motif, associated with meanings such as inner strength, self-esteem, resilience, impressiveness and a bright future ahead
Yogado still create hand mirrors in a variety of floral designs, however, the magnolia line seems to no longer be in production
