Hand-carved “kashi-zara” dishes with plum blossom motif
Vintage from the 1980s, each dish is individually hand-carved
Kashi means sweets; sara (or zara) means plate or dish
Small size dishes ideal for rice crackers, biscuits, dried fruit, and other little treats
Sourced at a flea market in Kamakura, these pieces are likely to be Kamakura-bori (Kamakura-style woodcarving) based on style and origin
While Kamakura-bori traditionally involves layering lacquer over carved wood, although rare, some artisans choose to leave the wood unlacquered to highlight the natural carved surface, as seen in these dishes
Plum blossoms are one of the first flowers that bloom early in the year during winter
Due to their strong resilience and vitality they are considered auspicious, warding off illnesses and brings longevity
Artisan signature is carved on back of each piece
