Senior Couple Kokeshi with Tsurukame & Shochikubai Design

  • Auspicious pair of kokeshi with hand-painted Tsurukame (crane and turtle) and Shochikubai (Pine, Bamboo, Plum)

  • The male is marked “Nachisan” indicating these pieces are from World Heritage Site Kumano Kodo in Wakayama Prefecture

  • In Japanese legend, cranes are thought to live 1,000 years and the mythical “minogame” turtle 10,000 years and considered to be auspicious for good health, longevity and wisdom as well as marital harmony

  • Pine, bamboo, plum, crane, and turtle are all familiar lucky charms in Japan, each with its own meaning

  • Pine represents "longevity" as it does not wither even in winter and stays green

  • Bamboo is a symbol of "growth and vitality" as it grows quickly and is hard to break

  • Plum blossoms represent "nobility and longevity" being the first to bloom in early spring, releasing its noble fragrance regardless of how old and covered in moss the tree has become

  • The combination of plum and pine can also signify prosperity in business
