Small Kokeshi titled “Oboro”

  • Sousaku “Creative” Style Kokeshi by Toa Sekiguchi from Shibukawa, Gunma prefecture (1942~ )

  • He began crafting Sousaku style dolls from 1966 and has received numerous awards, including the Minister of Education’s Encouragement Award (1985) and the Prime Minister’s Award (2001)

  • As a Sousaku kokeshi artist, he creates modern kokeshi dolls with freedom in design, unconstrained by tradition or region of production

  • This little doll is peeping her head out of a body painted in hot pink with bamboo motif

  • Its title Oboro means "hazy" or "shimmering", evoking the atmosphere of a mystical, moonlit night over a bamboo grove

  • A slightly larger version with a black-painted body and bamboo motif was produced during the same period and was often purchased together as a pair

  • Marked “by Toa” on base as well as handwritten note dating purchase date of January 6, 1983

  • To dust, wipe gently with a dry soft cloth

  • Avoid touching kokeshi with wet hands as the dye/paint may run
