Kyoto Ware Matcha Bowl
Chawan (Matcha bowl) with Ox Design
Green tea was introduced to Japan in the 12th century, brought back from China by Buddhist monks
Matcha bowls were originally imported from China, but over time began to be handcrafted in Japan
By the 16th century, as the principles of the tea ceremony evolved, so too did the aesthetic of the bowls, with simpler designs becoming more appreciated
This bowl is from Katsura Kiln in Kyoto and by the potter Tozo Hayashi
It is an Aka-Raku (red Raku) piece, finished in an ameyu glaze, a glossy translucent glaze with colours ranging from brown, reddish and yellow hues, reminiscent of melted candy
It also features an ox motif from the Japanese zodiac
Those born in the year of the ox are often considered to be diligent, reliable, patient, and hardworking
These traits reflect the ox’s historical role in Japanese society, especially in agriculture, where they were vital for farming and transportation
Marked “Tozo” on base
