Shisa Lion Design Ashtray from Okinawa

  • Vintage from the late Showa Period (1970-1989)

  • Shisa are a symbol of good fortune and are considered to be protectors from misfortune and evil spirits

  • In Okinawa they can be found on rooftops, in gardens and at the entrances of homes and commercial properties

  • The Shisa is male and open-mouthed to ward off evil as well as to bring in good spirits

  • When in a pair, the female has her mouth closed to keep the good spirits in

  • Can have uses other than an ashtray, such as a small pot plant holder, ikebana vase, trinket dish etc.
