Okinawan Shisa Pair (Brown)
Vintage Pair of Shisa Lions from Okinawa with Ame-yu Glaze
Shisa are a symbol of good fortune and are considered to be protectors from misfortune and evil spirits
In Okinawa they can be found on rooftops, in gardens and at the entrances of homes and commercial properties
The male is open-mouthed to ward off evil as well as to bring in good spirits, whereas the female has her mouth closed to keep the good spirits in
Display the male on the right and female on the left as you face them
Ame-yu translates as “candy glaze” and refers to a deep amber-brown glaze with a shiny finish
This particular pair is a rare find, with one of the pieces signed on the base
The signature can be read in a number of ways, however, in this case it is likely “Ko” and in reference to Koza ware, a kiln founded in 1952 in Moromizato, Okinawa
