Vintage from the late Showa Period (1970-1989)
Shisa are a symbol of good fortune and are considered to be protectors from misfortune and evil spirits
In Okinawa they can be found on rooftops, in gardens and at the entrances of homes and commercial properties
When in a pair, the male is open-mouthed to ward off evil and to bring in good spirits, whereas the female has her mouth closed to keep those good spirits in
Can have uses other than an ashtray, such as a trinket tray or soap dish etc.
Marked “Haebaru Yaki (Ware)”, denoting this was made in the Haebaru area
Located in the south of Okinawa Prefecture, Haebaru is known for producing local crafts such as pottery, woven textiles like “kasuri” and for being the birthplace of Tetsuo Kinjo, the main scriptwriter for the series "Ultraman"
