Lacquer Ware Sandanjyu (Three-tiered Box)
Tsugaru-nuri is a type of lacquer ware from the Tsugaru region of Aomori Prefecture with a history dating back to the mid-Edo period, around 300 years ago
There are four traditional styles of Tsugaru-nuri, the oldest and most popular being Kara-nuri, which was established by 1758 and is represented in this piece
Dozens of layers of different colored lacquer are applied and then polished down to reveal complex, unique, almost three-dimensional speckled patterns
With more than 50 processes involved, from preparing the base, applying lacquer, drying and polishing, and repeating these steps, production can take several months to half a year for just one piece
Sandanjyu boxes are traditionally used for food, most often for New Year’s celebratory meals and picnic bentos
In modern times, they can also be used to store other items such as stationery or accessories
