Tsugaru Nuri Sandanjyu Box

Lacquer Ware Sandanjyu (Three-tiered Box)

  • Tsugaru-nuri is a type of lacquer ware from the Tsugaru region of Aomori Prefecture with a history dating back to the mid-Edo period, around 300 years ago

  • There are four traditional styles of Tsugaru-nuri, the oldest and most popular being Kara-nuri, which was established by 1758 and is represented in this piece

  • Dozens of layers of different colored lacquer are applied and then polished down to reveal complex, unique, almost three-dimensional speckled patterns

  • With more than 50 processes involved, from preparing the base, applying lacquer, drying and polishing, and repeating these steps, production can take several months to half a year for just one piece

  • Sandanjyu boxes are traditionally used for food, most often for New Year’s celebratory meals and picnic bentos

  • In modern times, they can also be used to store other items such as stationery or accessories

CARING FOR YOUR LACQUERWARE PIECE

  • Hand wash gently with a soft sponge and wipe with a clean, dry, soft cloth

  • Remove rings, watches, or other accessories to avoid scratching

  • Do not leave soaking in water, as this can damage the lacquer

  • Keep out of direct sunlight to prevent discoloration and deterioration

  • For long-term storage, wrap in paper to protect from damage and help the lacquer and wood retain moisture, reducing the risk of cracking or peeling

Vintage, antique and pre-loved items may show some signs of aging or wear. Please inspect the photos carefully before making your purchase.
