Vintage pair of Folk Craft Horses

  • Yawata-Uma (Yawata Horses) are from Hachinohe in Aomori Prefecture, Tohoku (Northeast) Region

  • It is said the area was originally a breeding ground for regional horses and the wooden carved horses were created to pray for their healthy growth

  • Traditionally, they were decorated with chiyogami paper, whereas the patterns are now hand-painted

  • These folk craft pieces are widely loved as gifts for celebratory and commemorative occasions such as weddings, new homes, graduations, and births

  • This adorable pair is a particularly rare find, with each horse containing a pair of miniature Yawata-Uma inside its belly.
