  • This monkey sculpture is based on an eight-panel sculpture at Toshogu Shrine in Nikko, carved during the Edo Period

  • The relief depicts eight stages of life enacted by monkeys, the Three Wise Monkeys being the most notable

  • They represent the principle of Mizaru (not seeing), Kikazaru (not hearing), and Iwazaru (not saying)

  • During the Meiji Period (1868-1912), the Three Wise Monkeys was introduced to the western world

  • This lead to the coinage of the proverb see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil
