Contemporary Arita Ware Tokkuri (decanter) with Chrysanthemum Motif

  • Arita porcelain, Japan’s oldest porcelain, originated in the early 17th century in Arita, Saga Prefecture

  • Fukagawa Seiji was founded in 1894 by Chuji Fukagawa, the second son of Eizaemon Fukagawa of the Koransha company

  • The company has served as purveyor for the Japanese Imperial Household since 1910

  • Known for both its quality and artistry, Fukagawa Seiji produces a wide range of items including tableware, vases and decorative objects

  • This same design tokkuri (sake decanter/bottle) was presented to President Barack Obama during his state visit to Japan in April 2014

  • It was gifted by Seitaro Nakajima, the chief priest of Meiji Shrine, and is archived in the Presidential Library

  • The piece is decorated with chrysanthemum motifs, a flower associated with nobility and used as the crest of the Imperial family

  • A perennial that blooms in autumn, the chrysanthemum is one of the Shinkushi, the Four Noble Plants in Chinese art

  • In Japan, it has long been used ornamentally and was also believed to have medicinal properties promoting longevity

  • Marked “Fukagawasei” on base
