Contemporary Tokkuri by Fukagawa Seiji
Arita porcelain, Japan’s oldest porcelain, originated in the early 17th century in Arita, Saga Prefecture
Fukagawa Seiji was founded in 1894 by Chuji Fukagawa, the second son of Eizaemon Fukagawa of the Koransha company
The company has served as purveyor for the Japanese Imperial Household since 1910
Known for both its quality and artistry, Fukagawa Seiji produces a wide range of items including tableware, vases and decorative objects
This same design tokkuri (sake decanter/bottle) was presented to President Barack Obama during his state visit to Japan in April 2014
It was gifted by Seitaro Nakajima, the chief priest of Meiji Shrine, and is archived in the Presidential Library
The piece is decorated with chrysanthemum motifs, a flower associated with nobility and used as the crest of the Imperial family
A perennial that blooms in autumn, the chrysanthemum is one of the Shinkushi, the Four Noble Plants in Chinese art
In Japan, it has long been used ornamentally and was also believed to have medicinal properties promoting longevity
